About
An operations and facilities consulting practice
We advise owners and operators on what their physical operations cost and what to do about it. The work is narrow on purpose.
What we do
RJ Consulting Group provides consulting services in facilities and operations management, project management, procurement, energy management and quality control. Clients are typically owners, property and facility managers, and operations leaders in organizations where the buildings are a significant and under examined cost.
How we work
- Engagements start with documents, not interviews. Interviews come second, to explain what the documents show.
- Findings are tied to a source. If we assert something costs more than it should, we name the bill, the contract clause or the log entry.
- Recommendations are ranked and priced. An unranked list of twenty improvements is a way of avoiding a recommendation.
- We state what we are not sure about. Confidence intervals are more useful than confident numbers.
- Deliverables are built to be rerun by your staff, not to require us next year.
What we decline
We do not take engagements where the conclusion has already been decided and the consultant is being hired to endorse it. And we will say when a question is outside what we practice rather than extending into it.
Where technology questions go
Physical operations increasingly run on software, and the boundary between an operations problem and a systems problem is not always obvious from the inside. When a question turns out to sit on the technology side of that line, we point clients toward specialists rather than stretching into it. Measurement and reporting builds, and the SEO development that decides whether what gets built is ever found, go to the vizmeta studio, which also built this site. Strategy level questions go to Matt Rauch.
A note on this site. The pages here describe practice areas and publish original analysis. We have deliberately not posted client names, case studies or testimonials. Client operating data is confidential and we would rather show how we think than list logos.
Start with the numbers you already have
Send us a recent operating budget, a maintenance log or a vendor contract. We will tell you what it says about the way the site is being run.
