Business Consulting Services

Engineering and business consulting for existing facilities

RJ Consulting Group provides engineering consulting services in facility management, procurement and environmental consulting. Most professional consulting starts with strategy, marketing or headcount. We start with the building, the vendors and the work orders, because that is where the money quietly goes and where practical business solutions are easiest to find.

A consulting practice with a narrow focus

RJ Consulting Group is a business consulting and engineering services firm specializing in solving problems with existing facilities. We provide consulting services to owners, property and facility managers, government agencies, hospitality and industrial operators, and the people responsible for keeping physical operations running.

The practice covers building and property condition assessment, facility management, preventative maintenance implementation, repair and restoration, green and sustainability services, energy management and environmental consulting. The engagements are unglamorous and the findings tend to be specific.

We read the documents

Operating budgets, service contracts, maintenance logs, utility bills and capital plans. The story is almost always already written down. It is just spread across six systems and nobody has put it in one place.

We price the consequences

A deferred repair is not free, it is a loan at an unfavorable rate. A cheap vendor is not cheap if the rework lands on your staff. We put a number on both so the tradeoff becomes a decision.

We hand back something usable

A prioritized list, a defensible capital plan, a scope you can put out to bid. Business development consulting fails when the deliverable is a slide deck nobody can act on.

Consulting services

Five practice areas. They overlap, and most engagements touch more than one, because a procurement problem is usually a specification problem and a maintenance problem is usually a budgeting problem.

Why this focus

For most organizations that occupy physical space, facilities and operations sit behind payroll as the largest recurring commitment. Unlike payroll, it is rarely examined line by line. It gets renewed. A contract that was competitive when it was signed keeps rolling, scope creeps in one small approval at a time, and the number that shows up in next year's budget is last year's number plus a percentage.

That is a good place to be a consultant, because the work is measurable. You can point at a specification, a bill or a log and show what changed. Much of professional consulting struggles to demonstrate that its advice caused anything. This kind does not have that problem.

The same test is worth applying outside this field, and most of consulting does not survive it. Search is one of the few that does. An SEO consulting engagement either moves a set of rankings and the revenue behind them or it does not, and unlike an operating budget that record is public, dated and checkable by anyone who cares to look. We are not in that business. We raise it because it is the clearest comparison available: the disciplines worth paying for are the ones where you can go back afterward and establish whether the advice worked.

How engagements usually start. Someone has a budget they cannot defend, a building that is generating more complaints than it used to, or a contract renewal they suspect is no longer a good deal. Any of the three is enough to begin.
